Month 1 - Silk Paper projects

Make your piece of silk paper and then you can do pretty much anything with it.  These two examples are just a starting point.  Once you start making silk paper, you will be amazed at what you can do with it.  In the first case, a whole piece approximately the size of an A4 sheet is used behind a silk print.  The silk adds dimension, contrast and interest.  So easy.
In the second example, two sheets of contrasting silk paper where cut and woven to make a fantastic background to embellish over.

Month 2 - Working with Metal

experiment with metal foils and metal shims.  Stitch, applique, emboss.  The sample shown, Acid Rain uses a range of patchwork fabric, velvet and metal shim to create texture.

Month 3 - Working with Paper

I know!  It is not as bad as it initially seems.  There are a number of different techniques using paper to create stunning backgrounds or highlights.  And good quality water colour paper is made from cotton filaments, so it is just like patchwork fabric - sort of.  Oriental fans shown has water colour paper coloured with inks, sheer silk georgette and a handful of yarns and fibres couched down.

The second example here has watercolour paper, coloured with water soluble crayons on a yellow fabric.  Yellow flowers are appliqued through the paper and the stems machine stitched with a close zig zag stitch.  Moderate stitching will hold in the paper.

Month 3 - Creating texture with Silk

This example has three hand-dyed silk rods split into a number of different layers and thicknesses.  Beading still to come, but you can start to see the potential.

The second journal quilt was kindly offered by Julie Collins as an example of using throwsters waste.  The dragonfly body is made with throwsters waste.  It adds depth, texture and shape to the piece.  Gorgeous Julie. Thanks for sharing.
